Puppy Nutrition
It is well documented that pups need higher levels of protein and fat/oil than dogs.
This said it never fails to amaze me the amount of energy and people put into this subject without asking themselves what level of protein or fat does children require or get. The simple answer is we don’t know! So why so much thought put into this for our pups and kittens?
The answer, I believe is because the pet owning public are educated by the large pet food manufacturers into thinking that we must do this or that. The result is more of the shelves in the local pet shop are filled with a brands life-stage foods.
Just to grasp the absurdity of this point, my own mother is in her 92nd year. She still does her own shopping but never does she look for food for older people. She simply eats less of the same. Similarly with our pups, only they should eat more of the same by proportion. In other words, the more food our pets eat the more protein and fat they eat.
There is I believe a sinister argument against feeding high protein diets to pups. Consider the results of growing a plant with high levels of fertilizer. The plant grow too quickly and become ungainly in shape and size. Similarly with pups, but the results can be more devastating in that too much protein forces the muscle mass beyond the capabilities of the skeletal structure. Hip dysphasia or other joint problems can often be avoided by simply slowing down the growth process.
Burns Mini Bites have been developed with this in mind. For very young pups adding water to the Mini Bites to make a porridge is an easy way of weaning them onto solid food.
