Scratching Furniture

Introduce your kitten to a scratching post at an early age. Sharpening their claws is an instinctive activity for hunting and survival. They cannot be trained not to do it.

You can buy these at any pet shop or make them yourself. Beware that the scratching post does not have the same type of carpet as the rest of the house. If in doubt use cork tyles.

Bringing up a Kitten

Taking on a kitten is an expensive investment, you must ensure that not only are you prepared for the responsibility of a kitten but you can also afford healthcare and maybe insurance.

The First Months

As your kitten grows a number of issues may arise. Is the kitten to be kept indoors or allowed out?

What sort of training is required, how will it get in and out the house etc.

It is a good idea to train your cat to come when you call it. Using food is a good way of doing this.

I always whistle when I am putting food down and you can hear her coming at speed.

It is imperative to set boundaries with the kitten. Establish areas where it is not allowed like worktops, and behavior which is unacceptable like scratching furniture. A scratching post from the beginning should help to alleviate this problem.

Please do not free feed your kitten – this will only lead to a fussy eater. Feed 3 or  4  small meals initially but as time passes reduce to two meals. If your kitten doesn’t finish its meal then generally your are feeding too much food. Reduce the quantity until it is eating all offered and possibly looking for a little more.
