FAQ about Burns Pet Health Products

Q: Are the ingredients in Burns Products Human Grade?

A: All the ingredients in Burns Products are Human Grade. The chickens are humanely raised in a controlled environment, and the fish is from the North Atlantic (Herring). The grains are grown in North America and simply diverted from the human food industry to our production facility. I think the term  “human grade” popularized by the pet food industry is misleading. There are many food products available for human consumption which are not good for human health never mind our pets.

Q: Why does Burns Pet Health use chicken and fish “meal”?
A: The chicken and fish meal is a dry concentrated protein containing 10% water and little fat. Whole chicken meat, on the other hand, contains almost 70% water prior to production. It is used mainly by manufacturers to be able to place “Chicken” or whatever protein sources they use at the top of the ingredient list.

Q: Why does Burns Pet Health use brown rice as the main ingredient?
A: Brown rice contains nutrient rich bran layers, which are an excellent source of beneficial fiber, complex carbohydrates and essential amino acids. Equally important, brown rice is neither warming or cooling in terms of Traditional Chinese Nutrition. It strengthens the spleen- pancreas, soothes the stomach, expels toxins, increases energy, is hypoallergenic and beneficial for the nervous system.

Q: Burns Pet Health products are lower in protein, can you explain why when other pet food products are much higher?

A: Protein is used as a source of amino acids. Once the amino acid requirements are met, pets do not derive any known benefit from increased protein levels. Studies in people suggest that protein restriction slow progression of kidney disease. Please note that foods high in protein are also high in phosphorous which has been shown to accelerate the progression of kidney disease.  As to why other pet food use high protein, you will really need to ask them. I see a lot of hype about dogs in the wild but I don’t feed wild dogs only my pets.

Q: Why does Burns Pet Health not have a food for Older Dogs or Cats

A: The same reason humans don’t have food for older people – there is no need for it. My own mother is 92 years old – She does her own shopping but does not look for food for older people – She eats less of the same!

Burns Pet Health Products are generally lower in protein and fat than other commercial pet foods. We believe this should be the norm for dogs and cats thus the requirement for a special food is obsolete.
