Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency / Pancreatitis

If we think of the digestive system being like a juice extractor we can get a better idea of how this might be – The juice extractor has a simple function – Takes the good out,– the juices, and discards the waste – the pulp.

It is not hard to imagine what would happen to a Juice Extractor if we threw a few stones in along with the fruit or vegetables. Our juice extractor would grind to a halt very quickly. If instead of stones we use grit the same thing would happen only it would take much longer. The pancreas is part of the digestive system serving 2 main functions - producing insulin and digestive enzymes.  If we pile up on sugar for example the pancreas would be working way beyond it’s capabilities for long periods of time producing insulin, eventually giving up the cause from overwork – Diabetes result and we now we have a digestive system out of balance.

Similarly the pancreas gives up on producing digestive enzymes in sufficient quantity. At Burns Pet Health we believe Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency results from poor diet over a long period of time. Too many digestive enzymes are required to digest poor quality food resulting in an overworked pancreas.

It is these simple acts over time, resulting in the digestive system to breaking down in one way or another.  Excesses of protein, fat, salt and sugar, poor quality foods such as Soya or refined foods (example - rice bran rather than whole grain brown rice) and chemicals in the form of colors, flavoring, preservatives, emulsifiers etc.  These are like grit to our pet’s digestive system.

This is when the more serious problems occur – Addison disease, Cushing’s disease, pancreatic insufficiency, arthritis and rheumatism, auto–immune diseases, diabetes, heart disease, kidney problems, tumors and cancer. – In short –Degenerative Disease.

Burns products contain high quality, easily digested ingredients which do not overwork the digestive system.

In cases such as EPI, Burns should be slowly introduced to your pet very slowly; you may need to take several weeks to make a complete changeover as a sudden change in diet may cause digestive upset.

Fat and protein levels should be kept to a minimum, and all other foods avoided except when making a changeover.

We recommend that you feed the minimum amount recommended - it may also be better to feed small but frequent meals during the course of the day.
